The GenWhy Leaders Podcast

Nov 4, 2019

Show overview:

Andrew Potter is a former Army Ranger Captain turned entrepreneur. After moving up the military ranks, Andrew realized he didn’t want to be in the Army forever, and left to pursue his dream of opening a rock climbing gym in Kansas City. Nearly foregoing it because of lack of funding, Andrew landed two business loans and is now opening his third RoKC climbing gym location in just four years. Andrew then recognized another market need for rock climbing gyms in the sector of customer relationship management and billing software. So he started his second venture, Tile 5 and developed Approach, a software for climbing gyms. Andrew’s positive mindset and go-getter mentality in episode 014 will give you the courage to take a chance on your dreams today.

Andrew’s Why:

Andrew enjoys serving others and building teams. He wants to help others learn from his mistakes and give back to those around him to create a bigger picture.

Why start a rock climbing gym?

Having served in the Army, Andrew suffered from PTSD. What brought him joy and comfort was being outside and going to the mountains. Climbing is what allows him to do that and continue to heal. Opening a gym was a mix of his passion, serving others, and seeing a market need.

Factors that led to the growth of RoKC:

  1. Climbing is a niche sport and industry
  2. Amazing RoKC staff members that truly take care of customers
  3. Hiring staff members with strong character and a desire to serve others

Identifying the next need in the climbing market:

Andrew also started a software company called Tile 5, in which he and a friend developed a software called Approach that assists climbing gyms with client relationship management and point of sale systems.
