The GenWhy Leaders Podcast

Sep 29, 2019

Cory Bittner is the co-founder of Falcon Wealth Advisors. A fellow UCM Alumni, Cory has an interesting story of pivoting from a communications degree, to a financial planning profession. His career in finance started at a large, international bank before he and his team left & launched their own practice in 2016. In episode 010, we discuss the importance of not being forced to play small. While Cory & his team were having success in growing their business, their values and beliefs didn’t always align with those of the bank they worked for. A belief in placing clients’ interests ahead all others ultimately led Cory and his team to think big, and to make a move. Rather than accepting an offer to work for a competitor they opted to start their own business so they could build it the right way. If you feel like you could operate your business better than it’s currently being ran, this episode is for you.

Cory’s Why:

He knows the meaningful and positive impact financial planning can have on peoples’ lives. He’s excited about the business he and his team are building, and the dynamics of financial markets keeps his job interesting.

The impact of a Public Relations degree from UCM on a financial planning career:

The UCM PR program set the bar high for students. In Cory’s words, the program pushes students past mediocre. It helps students to improve, to believe in themselves, and hone their skill sets.

If you feel like you have to shrink to fit in your workplace, you are in the wrong workplace.

If you are providing value to the business and helping develop revenue, you should have the opportunity to grow. At their previous firm, Cory and his teammates knew they were building their practice more quickly than the average, and they wanted to build it with their client’s best interest as the highest priority. It became clear they needed to make a move. Thus, Falcon Wealth Advisors was born. Cory and Jake Falcon co-founded Falcon Wealth Advisors on December 2, 2016.

89,000 Cold Calls:

As a St. Louis native, Cory had to start fresh in his new home of Kansas City when it came to building his business. He couldn’t, nor did he desire to, rely on family, friends, or peer networks to make connections locally and grow. Consequently, Cory picked up the phone. To get where he is now, Cory made over 89,000 cold calls. Talk about persistence.
